General Description of the Institution

The Safiye Çikrikçioglu Vocational College was founded in 1991 with animal breeding and health programme under the name of “Kocasinan Vocational College” and finally the current name was given in 1998 for the memory of the mother of philantropist Çikrikçioglu brothers. College building consists of 12 classes, 6 laboratories, 20 offices, 20 lecturer offices, library, conference hall and a canteen locating on 3 floors. The teaching stuffs include 2 senior, 2 assistant professors and 6 lecturers. There are 1 school secretary, 5 officers, 1 salesman, 1 technician and 1 office-boy in management stuff.

There are 423 students in the Vocational College in 7 programs as Animal Health and Breeding, Meat Industry, Dairy Products, Agriculture, Poultry Breeding, Apiculture and Food Technology. The research and practice center- addicted to our university by National Estate Agency- is placed in Mithat Pasa region. This field (1.5 million m2) had been used for Feed Plants Production Station by the Minister of Agriculture and exchanged with practice field in Günesli. There are a total of 33 cows (13 milking cows, 6 heifers and 14 calves) used in dairy farming. There are 100 sheep in Yavas Research Center. The daily yield of milk (app. 250 l) is sold to the practical hospital of faculty of medicine, day-nursery and university stuff via our market. In addition cheese, yoghurt, butter and in summer ice-cream are produced in serve of the dairy products program students practice.

Admission/Registration Procedures

To graduate from Vocational school or equal profession school (certificate obtained from a foreign country must be approved by National High Education Council). Students of Vocational College are accepted without exam by OSYM except Apiculture Program. College registrations are done between the denoted registration dates by the candidate themselves

Qualifications Awarded

Vocational College serves to teaching-learning facilities at seven programs. The education courses are two years (four semesters), and those who are successful at the end of this period are awarded a diploma with the title of technician in the related area.

Admission Requirements

Admission requirements common to all programs are as follows: 1) high school diploma 2) placement score by Turkish Student Selection and Placement Center and direct placement though Vocational High Schools.

S.Cikrikcioglu Vocational College doesn’t have master and doctorate education programs.

Educational and Professional Goals

Vocational education has been primarily school-based with the emphasis on teacher-led instruction and workplace experience. Major goal is success in student preparation and readiness for the work environment. The aim of our College was to install a work-based learning programme to give students better preparation for the work place, and given them experience of work practice through work placements and then evaluate the out-comes of the experience.

  • Animal Health and Breeding Program’ aims of that veterinary technicians graduated from this school are educated as indispensable persons of veterinary health and care team. Students getting education of animal care and management, also learn basic principles of normal and abnormal vital situations in routine laboratory and clinical methods of this purpose. Veterinary technicians are educated with both theoretically and practically given lessons.

  • Dairy Products Program’ aim is production of dairy products as cheese, yogurt, butter, milk, milk powder, and ice-cream under hygienic conditions, preservation of the quality of these products until consumption. To achieve these purposes, the chemistry and biochemistry of dairy products, processing techniques, quality control, and the byproducts obtained during the process of production constitute the major topics of the curriculum.

  • Meat Industry Program’s aim is to raise thestudents who are educated on the subjects of meat technology, microbiology, hygiene, retail cutting, grading, turning into products, control, inspection.

  • Apiculture Program’s aim is to prepare the students who are educated on the subjects of honeybee care and management, honeybee disease, nectariferous plants. Also, to prepare the students production of such apiary products as honey, polen, propolis, bee venom, royal jelly, queen and preservation of these products until consumption.

  • Poultry Breeding Program’ aims of that to prepare the students broiler breeding, layer breeding, turkey breeding and quail breeding with research and practice oriented and prepare the skills of the students to meet the needs of a changing poultry industry.

  • The fundamental purposes of Food Industry Program are to supply reliable and successful personnel to food industry and to transfer necessary knowledge, skill and experiment. After the graduation, the students will be furnished with up to date food technology backgrounds like fundamentals of food engineering, research and development, management, food process technology, design-planning process and quality control, food microbiology, hygiene-sanitation, preservation-packaging, professional practices.

  • The aim of Agriculture Program is to educate technicians with knowledge of theoretical and practical processes on the subjects such as growing and caring of vineyard and garden plants, cope with diseases and harmful insects, agricultural mechanization, soil, vegetable growing and greenhouse.

Access to Further Studies

The graduates of the programs can obtain employment opportunities in the Ministry of Agriculture and private companies. Students can ask to vertical transfer examinations for bachelor degree related with self branch (Example: The student who graduate from Animal Health and Breeding department can acquire Bachelor from Veterinary Faculty or Agricultural Faculty).

No final test is required in any of the programs.

Examination and Assessment Regulations

Attendance to classes: It is compulsory to attend at least 80% of the classes in all of the degree programs.

Exams and Course Grade: The course grade will be based upon the performance of the student on the midterm exam and the final exam. The weights of the grades received in the midterm and final exams are 0.3 and 0.7 respectively. Properly done homework, project papers and active class participation will be valued in favor of the student.

Course Grades for the courses in the Degree Programs: The curve system which conforms to the European standards is applied only in the all of the programs. A letter grade of at least CC is required. A minimum of 50 out of 100 points in the final exam.

Accommodation

The University has two dormitories in Kayseri (one for males the other for females) each with a capacity to house 1500 students. The rooms vary from two to six beds. Central heating and hot water are available. Lunch and dinner are served. Barbers/hairdressers, internet cafe, laundry facilities, dry cleaning services and study halls are the additional conveniences that are provided. Private dormitories, student hostels, or flats in Talas or in the city center are among the other accommodation alternatives. No matter where the student stays, he/she can easily commute to and from the campus by means of public transportation.

Meals

A dining hall with a capacity of 2500 students is available on the main university campus in Kayseri. The menu is prepared by dietitians and is served throughout the academic year between the hours 11.00-13.00. The meals are nutritious, warm and palatable. Half of the total cost of the meals is covered by the Students Social Service Fund. There are also faculty canteens, restaurants and pastry shops where students are regularly served tea, coffee, soft drinks and various dishes prepared under hygienic and healthy conditions.

Medical Facilities

Students who apply to Medico-Social Health Center are given medical treatment for a small charge. If the need be, they are transferred to Gevher Nesibe Hospital of the university.

The students with dental problems are treated in the dental unit of the Medico-Social Health Center. Tooth pulling, cavity filling, and canal treatment are among the services provided by the center various medical tests are also done at the Medico-Social Laboratory. Psychological counseling and guidance is also provided for the students by the Medico-Social Unit.

Facilities for Special Students' Needs

In the faculty building a lift has been installed and a classroom made available on the ground floor to serve the physically challenged students. Free accommodation in the furnished flats of Demir Karamanci Housing Complex is offered by the University to the highest-achieving undergraduate students.

Insurance

Insuring all of the students against minor accidents has been put into practice as of 2004-2005 academic year. Insurance that covers the costs of therapy, prolonged injury and death is provided at a very small cost to the students.

Financial support for students

Our students are provided with a scholarship by various people and organisations due to the success efforts of the university. A great number of students are given the opportunity of jobs in the various units of the university and thus are provided with financial support in return for their services. Among the foundations and institutions providing scholarships are Erciyes University Foundation, Turkish Education Foundation, Turkish Piety Foundation etc.

Sports Facilities

Erciyes University Sports Club” was established at our university to enable students to participate in sports activities every year. Competitions among faculties and vocational colleges in various fields, under the title of “Principal Cup” and “Spring Fellowship”, are organised.

Extra-mural and Leisure Activities

Spring Festival, Sport and Theatre Festivals are organized all over the University.

Student Associations

The clubs established by the student leisure activity board formed by the pricidency of the university perform their activities incoorporation with the students. They are music club, book club, first aid and rescue club etc.
